Signed Program
Description:
Li Peng, remembered for his hardline stance in the Tiananmen Square Massacre as the "Butcher of Beijing," was a high-level Chinese politician and served as 4th Premier of the People's Republic of China; Wan Li was also a high-level Chinese politician and Communist revolutionary (last survivor of the legendary "Eight Immortals"), serving as 4th Vice Premier of the State Council (1983-88) and 5th Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (1988-93).
Signed Program, heavy stock 6" X 8¼", 4pp, Beijing, China, 30 August 1990. Red satin gutter ribbon, as issued. Near fine. Front leaf bears a simple, red-bordered printed "Welcome to the / Grand Opening / of the / China World Trade Center / August 30, 1990" in black, and below this Peng and Li each sign large and bold in Chinese characters. Separate inner leaf spells out a program of performers, welcoming address and guest speakers, and at 11:45 a.m. the "Ribbon Cutting" performed by Li Peng and Wan Li. The China World Trade Center began construction in Beijing's central business district in 1985, and while not fully completed until 2010 its official ribbon cutting took place in 1990. Li Peng and Wan Li signatures are exceptionally scarce in any form, and together on one significant item are a rare pair.
