    Description

First, the history. In 1884 the line was built to go to the Rainier Valley using horses to pull the carriages. In 1889 the line was modernized to use electricity. In 1900 most of the independent rail companies were bought and consolidated as the Seattle Electric Railway Co. On the back it says "No. 12 Rainier Valley Street Car Line 1900". I believe the artist V. Duner reflected the destination rather than the company name. It's a simple painting of the tracks. The artist, V. Duner, is a minor listed Seattle artist. But this dirty painting, with abrasions, is probably the 1st painting of Seattle's transit history. It measures 21-1/2 x 18-1/2" on artist board and again, could use a cleaning. Bumps to corners especially lower left. Painting has a 2"+ scratch and there are others of a lesser nature. Signed lower right. Also on the back is N.400 .00. Hard to believe that was written at the time as .00 seems like a lot. This painting can be picked up.
