W.T. Cosgrave, William Thomas Cosgrave, (Irish name: Liam Tomas Mac Cosgair) was a
radical Irish politician. He was sentenced to death after the Easter Uprising but had his
sentence commuted to penal servitude for life. He was eventually released after the
amnesty of 1919. Cosgrave succeeded Michael Collins as Chairman of the Provisional
Government of the Irish Free State from August to December 1922. He served as the first
President of the Executive Council (prime minister) of the Irish Free State from 1922 to 1933.
